When I first saw the trailer for this movie, my first reaction was " argh another mushy love story" and today I have to say I still think it. The only difference this time is most of my Japanese friends who marry foreigners all seem to agree. Its like " whatever" and you switch it off half way and walk away, I did that twice before I could force to sit myself down and let myself be tortured just to please my gullible friend.
If this movie was released lets say 200 years ago, I would go wow! that's amazing, the only Japanese woman to marry a foreigner and the fact that Japan was in isolation that would be extraordinary. The thing here is Japanese woman marrying a foreigner is no longer a unique case anymore. Actually its the trend right now, go to any club in roppongi and you will find a handful of 30 year old desperate Japanese women on the prowl for foreign guys. In most cases the Ladies go as far as dumping their Japanese partner for a foreign guy only to cheat on them later on in life when they realise, it has nothing to do with the blond hair, blue eyes and "ladies first" . Its the same story in most households, even coming from the husbands themselves. Its no secret what their life is like, ask any guy with a Japanese wife and you hear the same story til you start asking them why? marry them if you feel that way. Or are you that blind?? But I guess like my best friend put it " when in Rome......" guess that goes a long way here.
The thing I find disgusting is how perfect and dramatic they try to make the movie, sure it is based on someones daily life still I find it biased and full of BS. If so why not call it, my darlings name is Tony? or something other than My darling is a foreigner. The poll speaks for this movie when it hit an all time low, even the viewers have nothing good to say about it. The title sends out a wrong message which attracts a lot of viewers only to be disappointed by how biased and limited (to nothing but criticism) the plot is. But for some this is the story they came looking for in Japan, brace yourself for more head ache than you bargain for.
