Little details: LIFE IN JAPAN

whats your favourite Japanese food?
I like all Japanese food so Ill say what I don't like instead, I don't like eating anything raw including sushi and sashimi. Its not the taste but the mere thought of stuffing anything raw down my throat is disgusting.

What sound in the urban environment do you like best?
I like the sound of trains passing by my house, from a distance it sounds great. At night when the trains stop working I sometimes feel like its just too quiet.

what part of your daily routine do you despise most?
Catching the train during rush hour and taking early morning showers in the middle of winter.

Who is your favourite Japanese celebrity
Don't really have one. I'm not a huge fan of Japanese theatre and Music scene ;)
What is the strangest thing you have seen in Japan?
Their fashion sense, its just too strange. Even after 4 years I'm still trying to get use to it.

What is the strange thing you have eaten?
Too many to remember but I ate raw horse meat once, Cows tongue, raw whale meat. I find it strange to eat these things but at that time I had no choice because I had 3 Japanese starring at me waiting for me to say I like it.

What is your go to karaoke song?
maroon 5 (This love, she will be loved).

Favourite books by Japanese author?
My supplementary text books (does that count?). Oh and I read a lot of Japanese novels but I forgot the authors still I love all of them.

Best holiday you've had in Japan?
Summer 2007 (Hiroshima), Golden week 2009 (Sendai), Summer 2009 (rugby camp, hyogo prefecture), Christmas-New year 2009 ( Osaka), Winter 2009 (Kamakura, zushii, enoshima) and Summer 2010 (shikinejima)
I have a lot because I had such good memories with different set of people and friends. But the best one yet is Shikinejima summer 2010. I went there with my boyfriend, spend 4 days camping and the Island is just too beautiful had 4 different beaches to choose from, ate open fire cooked food and it was just great.

Do you bow?
Hahahaa, more than the Japanese. My major is hotel management so we have classes that concentrate on teaching us how to bow properly. With different names depending on the degree and purpose of your bow. Even now I still bow to foreigners and fellow islanders which is crazy.

What aspect of Japanese culture has made an indelible impression on you?
How they try to avoid conflict at all cost, getting into a friendly debate is even avoided. Which result in Baseball (for some) as a forbidden topic when conversing. Some cannot say that they dislike anything because they fear that it might result in a conflict.

What is one preconceived notion you had about Japan that turns out to be untrue?
That making Japanese friends would be easy since my social skills are impeccable. I do have friends who allow me into their circle but for me (and I'm sure most foreigners) being friends means more than just hanging out for a beer or two. Sometimes I hear them introducing me on the basis that we met. Eg, she is my EX-uni class mate or shes a friend of a friend. Even after 3 years of hanging out together and there are just too many boundaries with a Japanese friend and no matter what we still remain too polite even after a few years.

On your next vacation, where do you want to travel to?
Would love to go to other side of Japan facing Korea and china. Ive never been to that side of Japan and I would really love to go there or return to Osaka, Nara, Kyoto and Kobe and do a thorough tour of the Kansai region.

What do you miss most from home, apart from family and friends?
The warm climate, clean fresh air, the Ocean , fresh fish, Islands, free fresh mangoes, greenery and the laid back lifestyle.

What is the most adventurous thing you have done in Japan?
heheheehe...Hiking Mt Mitake at night, Pole dancing in front of a gay crowd (does that count?...lol),

Where is your favourite place to go on the weekend?
I love Japanese gardens and Landscape I always pick a new one to visit every weekend. I also love sitting in a cafe with my PC and either write while listening to my play list or just watch people rushing by.

What do you think about Japanese men?
Hmmmmmm.....they make great friends.

Most embarrassing thing you've done in a Japanese home in regards to Japanese manner?
Put chopsticks into a dish of fried noodles standing up the mother was horrified.

Do you slurp while eating noodles?
I do. At first I couldn't  but then I cant stand the dismayed look coming from the people working at the noodle shop and then they would ask me if it is delicious or if I don't like it. Now that I know how to, I cant reverse that especially when I'm at home with my boyfriend. I had to explain to him then apologise that I cannot undo the slurping anymore.

Have you ever gotten into a fight with a Japanese?
A heated argument once with my lecturer. She was always picking on me which was unfair because Japanese is not my mother tongue but I was able to compete with the Japanese students and even get better results. Once she just pick on me again for some unexplainable reason ending with her saying " Do you think you are special and better than the others?". I totally lost it and gave her a piece of my mind ending in a really bad scene (no hair pulling but I stood over her). She was transferred a week later and I knew it has something to do with that. I felt bad for her but being the only foreigner in a school can be tough too.
Once in a bar ( I hate bullies), A wannabe was hitting on my Japanese friend roughly as if she was a 2 dollar crack whore. I stepped in and it turned ugly but I was smart enough to make friends with the navy dude as soon as I arrive so yeah I got back up :)

Ever witness a fist fight in Japan?
Never just a lot of pushing and shoving but that's it. I was at a beach last summer and some Yakuza-rookies/wannabes had an argument which turned into pushing, shoving and hair pulling (he even removed his earrings). I was disappointed, I waited for the first punch til mid afternoon when everybody was dismissed. Oh but I witness 4 police officers got kicked in the butt and sent scrambling  back to their police post (Let me remind you this is Japan)

If you leave Japan what will you miss the most?
Japan, I will miss Japan the most....hehehe...I love every single thing about Japan. Ill just name a few then....
The food, the reliable transportation system (even if I do get crushed every morning), the feeling of safety even at 2am in the morning, my high speed Internet, the four seasons..........
