Just got back from a wonderful weekend in London. Having lived in Tokyo, getting around in London was too easy. However getting there with easy jet was a bit of a hustle. Travelling with a 14 month old kid was quite stressful. A week before I spent a good whole day researching if easy jet would allow us to take a pram and how big the pram should be. I got a lot of inaccurate information. For example, I read online that you could have your pram ready once you disembark. Let me tell you its not true! You have to go to the baggage claim area. While in Geneva airport there is a separate baggage claim area for prams and other special baggage.
We decided to be on the safe side and bought the smallest pram we could find. However easy jet accepts all sizes. I still think it was a good move to buy a smaller and cheaper pram to use for travelling. My everyday pram costs around CHF1500 ( Yes until you have a kid, you wouldn't even think that they cost that much ). And I don't want the tissue ripped or the wheels scratched or malfunction. Because its one of those baby essentials that you could either use it again for your second, third or fourth kid and if you resell it you could still get a good price for it. Believe me second hand prams costs CHF600 +
We were travelling light, adhering to easy jets 1bag/ person policy. We checked in at Geneva airport, while waiting to board the plane a kind fellow passenger told us that we could join the ' Speedy boarding' queue. Which in my opinion benefits all. Passengers with little children should be allowed with to join the 'speedy boarding' queue. Parents with babies and toddlers move slower and take more time to settle down into their seats. Unfortunately, on our return the Gatwick airport Easy Jet staff wouldn't allow us to go do ' speedy-boarding' thus the flight delay. Yes! an hour late because the we all couldn't board as fast as they hope we would. Once again its families with kids that cause the delay. Because we keep our prams for as long as we could, then we have to fold them. Carry our kids, find our seats and only one partner is left with the responsibility of finding a space for our hand luggage. While the other try to settle in with the kid/kids. Meanwhile you kept at least 20 people waiting to get to their seats.
Arrived at Gatwick airport and making our way into the city was a nightmare. London's metro is inaccessible, we had to carry the pram up flights of stairs or down. Some elevators go only half way. There's a huge gap between the trains and the platform. During rush hour its impossible to move around with a pram. I wonder how the physically challenged population manage to take the metro without any help.
London is a beautiful city, a bit dirty though. There are century old garbage everywhere, in private lawns, along the canals....which got me thinking, is London too dirty or is Switzerland too clean ? I go to Italy, France well basically most of Europe and I find it dirty. I find the public toilets dirty, in restaurants the chances are high that there'll be no toilet paper in the cubicles.
The landmarks however were impressive, the Westminster is just magical. I love running around London, catching the famous double Decker buses. Just didn't go out for Fish-n-Chips, went out for Indian food instead. I think London has the best Indian food around, maybe even better than in India.
Another thing I find so nice about London is the number of parks or greenery around. We stayed with our friends in one of the upper middle class neighbourhoods. You'll find a park or playground for kids within every 300 metres or less.
Anyway London is an amazing place to visit and I will definitely go there again and again. Especially to Camden town, I love that place.
For Solomon Islanders, you don't need a visa to enter as a tourist. Just be prepared to provide a lot of information, as well as your itinerary, where you'll be staying and often, proof that you have the necessary funds to meet your expenses during your stay.
