I said it!

One Saturday a month back, a prominent diplomat and well educated Solomon Islander was brutally murdered. It was one of those meaningless deaths. As we sympathize with his family and relatives we also condemn the people responsible. While the family grieved for this promising young man, the rest of the nation criticize the Police, RAMSI, the cold blooded murderers, the unemployed youths and their families.
Forum Solomon Islands on Facebook carried a lot of comments and threads about what had happened. People voicing their anger, their concerns and what they deem as solutions to the growing criminal activities happening around Honiara. I tried to follow the threads and on one occasion commented on one of the posts. However I'm more of a the-glass-is-half-full kind of person and with all the adrenaline and grieving I rather step out and come back to my blog to voice my opinions.

Where is the Police force?. Lazy Police officers. Night Patrols. Rearm the Police. RAMSI-send them home. RAMSI degraded our police force........Shoot to Kill policing

I would love to see RAMSI leaving and then what? We forget that without RAMSI in the first place we would be digging each others grave. Can anyone honestly say that the ethnic tension would have ended without the help of RAMSI? Our Police officers at that time had no sense of loyalty to their badge. They pick up guns and terrorise innocent civilians, rape young innocent girls and ruin a lot of businesses. I for one am still grateful for RAMSIs presence in the Solomon Islands. And gahhhd! I wish they remain there forever.
Not everything is RAMSIs fault. RAMSI trained our police officers to be efficient and what to do in combat. They are slowly giving back the leadership roles to the local police officers. Maybe instead of blaming RAMSI we should blame ourselves for being too lazy to do our jobs right.
Rearming the Police is not the best option at this moment. Instead of recruiting wantoks, why not set up a proper police academy? Just like the College of Higher Education (SICHE). Policing is not all muscles and bravery. Good Policing is smart policing. Set up a proper communication with the local community. Gain their trust, that way when things like this happens, the community will trust the police enough not to retaliate.
Who appointed you God? Just because it works effectively for PNG doesn't mean we should do the same. Our goal is avoid the need for such special forces or whatever the hell you call it.

Send these unemployed youths and their families home...

That ship has sailed...Most of us are ignorant to the fact that these poor buggers have no home #Yes! I said it!# In some provinces and districts, definitely possible. Imagine sending two thirds of KoaHill and the rest of the squatters home. Just because some of us are fortunate to own a bit of land doesn't mean the rest of the population share the same fortune. In 2000, a lot of people board ships to return home because of the ethnic unrest. Half of these people were stranded in Auki, the rest had to squat with relatives. 2 weeks later they return to Honiara. Admit it! some of these squatters have no place they can call home. Besides you need more than 2 square meters of land to survive.

What happen, happened because our country is going through some social and economical disorder. Its a result of ongoing problems that were ignored by our elders. I believe educating the citizens is the way forward. And educating doesn't always equal tertiary education. What about simple awareness programs left and right?
